There have been agua azucarillos y aguardiente scenes between her and his jealous new woman, Pepa's former friend Manuela, an itinerant spirit vendor, but Vicente overcomes the picador's jealousy and promises that Manuela won't cause any more trouble.
She is spoiling for a fight, and when Pepa tells her to clear off, calmly sits down and demands to be served. Agua, azucarillos y agua azucarillos y aguardiente has remained to this day a classic in the repertoire of the Spanish lyric theater, and is revived frequently.
It is constructed of two tableaus, the first of which is comic, and pokes fun at Asia, a self-centered poetess, and the center of the story that develops in the second tableau.
The second tableau is longer and more involved. Robles develops his characters and spins forth his story.
The setting is a summer's night on Recoletos avenue in Madrid, in one of the poorer districts of the city. Robles captures all of Madrid's atmosphere in his musical numbers, aided by touches of local color, customs, language, and picturesque details in the script.
Street cries, popular dances, solos, and choral numbers evoke the atmosphere of the city. Watersellers, nannies, water biscuit sellers, and outdoor musicians help form the backdrop for the agua azucarillos y aguardiente, and the musical numbers help inspire the action.
